Warning Signs of Serious Psychiatric Disorders
Emotional Changes
- Unstable feelings and emotions
- Loss of interest in normal activities and hobbies
- Statements about feeling helpless, hopeless, useless or about “giving up”
- Suicidal thoughts
- Extreme mood swings
- Excessively happy, talkative or energetic with impaired judgment about consequences of actions
- Extreme or long-lasting grief (after loss of spouse, child, friend, home, etc.) with impaired functioning
- Frequent, unexplained crying
- Unprovoked anger, hostility or threatening behavior
Physical Changes
- Unexplained change in appetite or weight
- Severe and persistent changes in sleep/wake patterns
- Medically unexplained and significant change in ability to speak, hear, see or move
Changes in Ability to Think and Reason
- Unexplained loss of concentration or ability to reason clearly
- Seeing or hearing things that do not exist
- Unexplained disorientation or confusion
